Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens Review

I’m late to the party reviewing Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but in all honesty I was focusing on getting 100% and was selfishly enjoying playing it, but as I managed to bank the 100% record  recently I wanted to let you know my thoughts on matters. At the end of the day if you haven’t jumped on the band wagon yet it’s certainly a title worth getting hold of, especially if you loved the previous Lego outings!

The best game yet!

From the outset this has to be one of the best Lego Games I’ve played so far and what I love about it is how close it follows the film ‘The Force Awakens’. In some ways you won’t need to buy the standalone film anymore because playing this game is like watching the film! However as a bonus you get the Lego format with all the humour thrown in for good measure.

New Gameplay Mechanics

I think the popularity of the Lego games has always been the OCD Lego bashing nature, so as you destroy Lego objects you can collect the fallen studs and use these to either buy new characters or unlock True Jedi Status; which earns you special Yellow bricks that are vital to get 100% completion.

You also have the familiar Free-play options so the secrets that are laden around the environments, such as mini kits/Red Bricks, during the story mode can be revisited and unlocked with swap-able characters. RED bricks are great to find because they can be purchased afterwards (using stud currency) and will provide either Multipliers for building up your studs faster or silly options such as Disco Lightsabres!

While this sounds the same as the previous games and you would be correct, it is! What’s cool about Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is it adds a few new modes to....

Multi-build!

The first of which is the multi-build system. Usually in-game you bash certain Lego objects and they will start to flash indicating that you can build something new from the rubble. However in this new build system while you bash the objects down they will start to flash in yellow, to indicate there is more than one way to build structures. So for example by holding down the build button you can use the thumbstick's left/right movement to view where the new builds can be placed. This again can lead to new paths or more mini-kits. For me it just ads a more enjoyable incentive to re-play levels.

New combat

I absolutely love the authentic Lightsabre and blaster noises in this game and using Jedi Powers to tackle some of the enemies and puzzle elements dotted about the playing field is equally as cool. However Combat in general has become more enjoyable thanks to the new Combat options, one of which introduces cover based gameplay.

While not in the same league as the Gears of War series it does provide a break from the standard combat you would have witnessed in the other titles.

Additionally there are several sections which see you take control of either the Millennium Falcon or X-Wings and the aim is to either attack or defend against the might of the First Order!

Mind you, things can get a little confusing in two player co-op mode when you are flying these sections, but once more the combat elements adds a new level of fun to the Lego franchise.

Level Design

Level design also offers authentic Star Wars themes and I absolutely love all the different locations, which range from Hoth like snow scenes to the Desert scenes of Jakku.

Most of the Force Awakens cast’s voices i.e. Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, BB-8, as well as Kylo Ren, General Hux and Captain Phasma, have also been used in the game. This of course adds more authenticity to the title and yet the extra Lego humour makes it better than the film at times!

My only qualm is that sometimes the main story mode gets a little disjointed because you need to select your next location via an on-board computer system, usually on the Millennium Falcon (though the Falcon does allow you to play the Chess style game as seen in Star Wars a New Hope!) and using the latter gets a touch confusing as to where to head next.

Additionally before the latest large patch you could at least see your progress on each level, but now they implemented a system where it simply shows a global percentage marker to indicate what is left to complete. I preferred the old system because now you need to head to the planet surface in order to view your progression.

With that said I loved this game and the replay value, via the Free-play mode, was never a chore as much as it was in the previous outings. The Star Wars theme, with added humour, really does work best here.

Carbonite Characters

I nearly forgot to mention that dotted about the various levels you can uncover Carbonite figures, which need to be defrosted first, and these will then reveal special characters insides, such as classic Luke Skywalker. Additionally you can also do sub-quest to unlock even more characters including my fave Star Wars Character of all, Boba Fett!

Summary

For me Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a  fab game and the only criticism is that in order to get true 100%, in terms of Gamer score is you need to purchase a Season pass to unlock all the DLC. With that said the game is still brilliant and manages to capture the Film/Star Wars franchise perfectly! If you haven’t played this game yet I whole heartily recommend you do so, especially if you want a game for two player couch coop.
